Beneficts of the Mediterranean Diet

One of the more common fallacies about nutrition is that everybody that leaves at the Mediterranean countries follows the Mediterranean Diet. Consequently, all of them should be slim and healthy, but we can see that the reality is different. From day to day, the percentage of people that respect the Mediterranean nutrition pattern decreases. Therefore, the population, especially the children is getting more and more obese. Junk food, manufactured meal, heaps of rubbish full of saturated and what is worse, trans fats, are flooding the supermarkets, the homes and the schools. All these circumstances combined with sedentary plays, long hours of watching television and new unhealthy habits are condemning the youth to have a shorter and worse life than those of their parents.

I daresay that less than ten per cent of the Mediterranean citizens is having a proper nutrition nowadays. However, these people are having clear advantages:

They live longer.

They live better.

They suffer fewer cardiovascular diseases, brain ictus or heart attacks (It is one of the most important recommendations to prevent metabolic syndrome).

They suffer less from diabetes and control better this condition.

They have a minor incidence of cancer.

They have fewer incidences of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.

They prevent and avoid many other chronic diseases.

They have less risk of depression and other psychological problems. Mediterranean Diet keeps the brain healthy.

They almost eliminate the risk of asthma in children.

They are more fertile.

They may control better the hair loss.

However, Mediterranean Diet is not a diet for a couple of weeks. It is a lifestyle. You can eat everything but in adequate proportions. You don’t have to feel hungry, neither physically nor psychologically. You can control your life. One day you can make an excess, but in the same evening or in the following day you correct it. You may gain a couple of pounds at Christmas, but you can easily lose them in January.
